Bid Goodbye to Dust: 7 Foolproof Steps to Improve Air Quality at Home
Freepik benzoixPhoto by Freepik/benzoix

Having good air quality at home is important for our well-being as various health issues, including respiratory problems and allergies, can arise from poor indoor air quality. While we often associate pollution with outdoor environments, recent events in Bangkok serve as a strong reminder that indoor air quality is equally vital.

According to a report from the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda), the Land of Smiles recently experienced seriously hazardous levels of fine dust pollution. This highlights the importance of taking proactive measures to enhance the air we breathe within our own homes. Here are seven ways to improve air quality at home.

Maintain Clean Floors

Loading...

Regularly vacuum and mop your floors to remove dust, pet dander, and other allergens that can accumulate over time. Use a vacuum cleaner to effectively capture fine particles and prevent them from recirculating into the air.

Invest in Air-Purifying Plants

Loading...

Embracing the natural world within your home can significantly impact air quality. In a study by NASA, indoor plants may improve air quality and remove pollutants. Consider investing in a variety of air-purifying plants, renowned for their ability to filter out harmful toxins from the air. From a spider plant to a peace lily and a snake plant, introducing these green companions into your living spaces can create a healthier indoor environment.

Control Humidity Levels at Home

Loading...

Maintaining ideal humidity levels in your home is key for healthy indoor air quality, as advised by the Environmental Protection Agency. Too much moisture can breed mold and mildew, worsening respiratory problems and air quality.

Combat these issues by using a dehumidifier in damp spots like basements and bathrooms. Aim to keep humidity between 30% and 50%, as recommended by the EPA. This not only stops mold and mildew growth but also boosts overall indoor air quality. Following these simple steps can greatly enhance your home’s air quality.

Utilise Natural Cleaning Products

Loading...

Most home cleaning products contain chemicals that could potentially harm health, as highlighted by the American Lung Association. The emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other chemicals while cleaning can lead to long-term breathing problems, allergies, and headaches.

Ditching these harsh chemical cleaners in favor of natural alternatives can make a difference. Simple household items like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice possess powerful cleaning properties without releasing harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. By opting for these natural solutions, you not only maintain a clean home but also contribute to a healthier indoor atmosphere for you and your family.

Enhance Ventilation at Home

Loading...

Enhancing ventilation is key to fostering a fresh and breathable indoor environment. Open up windows and doors whenever possible to invite fresh air into your home. Furthermore, consider installing exhaust fans in areas such as kitchens and bathrooms to effectively remove excess moisture and pollutants.

Upgrade Air Filters

Loading...

When it comes to maintaining your HVAC system, don’t overlook the importance of regular filter maintenance. According to Georgian Water and Air, skipping air filter replacements might seem insignificant, but it’s a big deal. When your filter gets clogged, your HVAC system has to work harder, using more energy and leading to higher bills. Plus, it needs more maintenance. A dirty filter means worse indoor air quality, which can harm your health over time.

Ensure that air filters are replaced on schedule to efficiently capture dust, pollen, and other airborne particles.

Limit Indoor Pollutants

Loading...

Take proactive measures to minimise indoor pollutants and create a healthier living environment for yourself and your loved ones. Implement smoke-free zones within your home and establish strict no-smoking policies indoors. Additionally, consider utilising an air quality monitor to regularly assess pollutant levels and identify areas for improvement.
